Senate Health and Human Services Committee to Study Efficient Use of APRNs in Texas
The Senate Health and Human Services Committee's has received an interim charge that reads as follows:
“5. Study the state's current and long-range need for physicians, nurses, dentists and other allied health and long-term care professionals. Provide recommendations for ensuring sufficient numbers of health care professionals, focusing on medically underserved and rural areas of the state as well as the Border region. Consider health care delivered by Advanced Practice Nurses in terms of access, cost and patient safety and include an assessment of independent prescriptive authority with those states in which prescriptive authority is delegated by a physician. Make recommendations to enhance the efficient use of Advanced Practice Nurses in Texas.”
Important Information Pertaining to Prescriptive Authority
As a result of the passage of SB 532, the Texas Medical Board is required to implement a prescriptive delegation registration process. Below is the information that we have received thus far about this process.
The new page for accessing the new delegation info on our website is: http://www.tmb.state.tx.us/professionals/physicians/delegatingPrescriptiveAuthority.php. This has links to the new forms as well as an explanation of the rule changes.
In addition, soon the Texas Medical Board will have posted new information regarding waiver requests and the penalties associated with violations available at: http://www.tmb.state.tx.us/professionals/np/pdwreqs.php.

Nurses Service Organization announces the NSO Outstanding Nurse Search!
Nurses Service Organization (NSO), a leading provider of professional liability insurance to nursing professionals, is launching the NSO Outstanding Nurse Search to share and reward the achievements and dedication of nursing professionals around the country.
“Every nurse (RN, NP, CNS…) has inspiring stories to tell about how they’ve had a positive influence on their patients’ lives and the nursing profession. We want to capture and share these personal experiences. That’s why we chose to use Facebook. We feel it is a great medium for people to pass along their stories and connect with one another,” states NSO Executive Vice President Michael Loughran.
To Enter: Join at www.facebook.com/nsocares. There you can fill out a simple form. In 500 words or less, tell us why you or your co-worker, mentor or supervisor is an outstanding nursing professional. Recall one incident or tell us about a lifetime of achievement. Maybe it was devotion to a field of research, dedication to a specialty unit, or a specific incident that aided a patient. Let us know how you or your nursing colleague made a difference.
To Win: Starting in October 2009, every month for five months the NSO Advisory Board will choose that month's winning story. Plus, they’ll add in one ‘wildcard’ for a total of six winners. Each winner will be awarded a $500 shopping spree at www.nsomarketplace.com.
In March 2010, we’ll open up the voting for the final NSO Outstanding Nurse to the entire nursing community. You’ll get to vote for the NSO Outstanding Nurse from our six winners. That outstanding nurse will win a $2,000 grand prize Gift Card.
