Amy Hemingway plays a pivotal role in improving the health and well-being of her community through her innovative initiatives focused on pediatric congenital heart disease (CHD) awareness, education, and advocacy. As the Community Outreach Nurse Practitioner at the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, Amy leads efforts to bridge the gap between healthcare services and the community, particularly underserved populations. She organizes and participates in various community events, such as the Science Mill event, where she provides hands-on experience with pig hearts to school students, fostering a deeper understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology among the youth. Additionally, Amy’s involvement in Project Sunshine brings play and education to children facing medical challenges, while also educating medical professionals in supporting patients and families with chronic medical needs. These initiatives have a direct impact on the health and well-being of the community by raising awareness of CHD, promoting healthy lifestyles, and providing support to those in need.

By pioneering the development of the Community Outreach NP role at the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, Amy has demonstrated the invaluable contributions that NPs can make to community health and wellness.

Through her proactive engagement with community organizations and events, Amy showcases the unique skills and expertise that NPs bring to healthcare delivery. Additionally, her involvement in pediatric conferences nationwide, where she represents the role of NPs in pediatric cardiac care, further promotes the visibility and recognition of NPs as essential members of the healthcare team.
