Veteran Brings Commitment and Excellence to San Antonio
Member Spotlight: Jose L. Villa, DNP, APRN, FNP, BC – Veteran and Practice Owner Brings Military Excellence to San Antonio Healthcare – Villa Family Clinic, PC
With roots in military critical care and a passion for community service, Jose Villa exemplifies how military experience can create exceptional healthcare leaders. As one of the original members of the Air Force’s critical care air transport team, his military background developed an ability to identify and stabilize critically ill patients—a skill that has proven invaluable throughout his civilian career.
“During COVID, we were the only clinic open in our area,” he notes. This dedication to community needs stems directly from military values of service and commitment. His extensive background in cardiology interventional and electrophysiology, combined with doctoral research on atrial fibrillation, positioned him to recognize complex conditions that others might miss, including COVID-related cardiac complications.
His journey to practice ownership began in 2001 when he first became a nurse practitioner, but he deliberately gathered diverse clinical experience before establishing his clinic in an underserved area of San Antonio.
His dual identity as veteran and healthcare provider creates a unique connection with the military community in San Antonio. Having navigated military healthcare systems firsthand at Brooke Army Medical Center, he understands the bureaucratic challenges veterans face. This insight has fostered strong referral networks within the veteran community and led to an expanding relationship with the VA.
Looking ahead, his practice continues to grow with purpose. He’s welcomed another nurse practitioner who specializes in women’s health, addressing a critical need for patients who prefer female providers for annual exams and reproductive health concerns. This colleague brings expertise in maternal health and hormonal treatments, helping patients with PCOS and menopause symptoms. His vision includes expanding services and bringing on additional NPs to meet community needs.
As an active Texas Nurse Practitioner member, he credits the organization with providing essential resources and support for his clinic’s development. His involvement as a TNP ambassador during legislative sessions allows him to advocate for the profession while building relationships with state representatives.
Through his practice, he demonstrates how his military background and nursing compassion create healthcare excellence, inspiring the next generation of nurse practitioners considering practice ownership.
Thank you for your service, Dr. Villa!
