REBECCA SLININGER

MSN, Family Nurse Practitioner Program
Texas State University

My name is Rebecca Slininger, and I became a Registered Nurse in March 2013. I’ve had a varied and interesting experience as an RN. I worked for three years at the county hospital in San Antonio, where I learned about both the culture and language of the Hispanic population.

In 2016, I started working as a travel nurse, which took me to Colorado, Washington State, and Hawai’i until mid-2017. We eventually settled down, and I took a full-time position at my travel site in Round Rock, Texas, working four years on an Inpatient Rehab unit.

After all that excitement and becoming a mother of two, I sought positions with more family-friendly work hours. While working as an elementary school nurse, with a population split between the affluent and refugees, I found my calling to become an FNP. Through the questions of parents and teachers, I saw the great need for clear and accessible primary care. I experienced the power of prevention firsthand and felt driven to further my education for the first time in a decade.

I look back with appreciation for everyone I met along the way, especially those who pushed me and asked more from me than I asked of myself. Each steppingstone was difficult and exhausting but critical to my journey. I’m proud to be taking this next step with Texas State University.
